City of Lights 03/20
As mentioned, this trip has been in the planning stages for three years. We wanted to introduce our 3 grandchildren to travel abroad. We went to Italy two years ago with Courtney, Beth, Ethan , and Riley. We were waiting for Samuel to get a little older. Samuel studied France and WWII quite a bit. He wanted to visit the D Day Beaches. It was time, Samuel is now 13. Linda rented us an apartment in France that would accomodate 5 people and rented a house in Bayeux, Normandy suitable for 8. I reserved a car in Caen big enough for 5 weeks, Our travel plans were for Linda, Beth, Samuel and my self.
Two weeks ago Ethan told us he wanted to go on this trip. So, we bought him a plane ticket, and now the 5 of us are in Paris.
Our trip over was uneventful. However, we misjudged the length of time it would take to get through airport security and allowed enough time to check our bags and pass through security. The national news talked at length on how long it would take to get through security. The time it took us to get through TSA precheck was about 6 minutes. We were there in plenty of time. We waited about 4 hours in the Delta Club for our flight to be called. We overheard a lady thank a TSA agent for coming to work. The TSA agent replied that the shutdown is not effecting her at all. Delta pays their salary, they do not miss a paycheck. When the shutdown is over, they will be able to repay Delta with the checks they receive.
Delta had oversold our flight by 10 passengers. Everyone showed up. The ticket agent started calling for volunteers to wait until the next day. They started offering $500.00 per passenger. No takers. The bidding finally went to $1800.00 per passenger, plus accomodations, extra skymiles, and a seat the next day at 4:00PM. Our flight was delayed 45 minutes so they could get the luggage for ten people off our plane. We arrived in Paris at 1:30 PM European time. French customs was efficient and we were welcomed to France. A long day and night.
We took a taxi to our apartment, unpacked, had an early dinner, and retired for the night. We ate at a nearby restaurant, La Lupa.
Tomorrow our Paris adventure will begin.
